Welcome to my home page
I offer violin and viola instruction in my first line of lessons. All age groups are welcomed. The young are especially welcomed! In 2007, I received recognition for “exemplary, outstanding” work in music education by the US State Dept. (Office of the President). Prior to this, I received “Highly Qualified Teacher” designation under United States’ No child Left Behind Act. I hold a bachelor of music degree from the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, master of music from the Boston Conservatory and a doctorate of music arts in violin performance from the University of Connecticut where I was awarded a full scholarship and teaching fellowship.
My second line of lessons include theory of music for all grades. I provide classes focused primarily on attaining the ABRSM grade 5 theory requirement. Because music is an aural art, students will will learn not only with with their ears but with their eyes as well. My classes will enable the student to recognize auditorily and visually - major, minor, diminished, half diminished and dominant 7th sonorities among.
My third line of lessons include chamber music and orchestra. If you want your child to be truly happy playing the violin or any musical instrument, chamber music and orchestra are vital. Learning an hour a week at the teacher’s studio and then returning home to play to oneself for the rest of the week - is learning in abstraction. In chamber music and orchestra, the exercises and disciplines I use engage the student's intellect and soul. Students experience a coming together of minds when they learn to listen to their friends in the orchestra and correspondingly play with the same articulations, bow strokes and expressions of their friends, while at the same time figure out the math of the notes in front of them – how they line up with the other notes of the orchestra.
Moreover, music has an emotional component that is relevant only when studied under the lens of culture. In my classes, I will emphasize musical tastes, performance practices as well as the social class, political and religious structures that were in place during the genesis/composition of the pieces being studied. I firmly believe that music in all its facets teaches the student compassion, empathy and perseverance.
